Spiders | Cool Facts
Did you know orb weaver spiders are perfectly designed to catch insects!
With eight eyes they have a nearly 360-degree view of their surroundings to helps them detect prey and potential predators. Unlike jumping spiders, who have very good eyesight, orbweaver’s eyes are designed mainly to detect movement. They don’t really need their eyes to hunt though. The tiny hair like structures covering their bodies, called setae, are sensitive to the tiniest vibrations allowing them to detect prey caught in their web, or even the minute change in air current as they approach.
Orb weaver spiders also have specialized legs. Their front legs are longer and stronger than their other legs, which allows them to hold onto their web while catching prey or defending themselves. Additionally, they have special claws on their feet that help them grip onto surfaces, even on smooth or slippery surfaces like glass.
Orb weaver spiders can also produce different types of silk. They have specialized glands that produce different types of silk, each with its own properties. For example, they can produce a sticky silk to catch prey, a non-sticky silk for the structural parts of their web, and a strong silk for their egg sacs.
Another interesting part of spider’s bodies is their unique jaws . Their jaws are shaped like a pair of pincers called chelicerae which move in a scissor-like motion. Orb weaver spiders also have venom glands in their jaws that help immobilize their prey. While almost all spiers have venomous fangs most orb weavers in Canada cannot break human skin, and fewer still can cause harm to humans.
Fearless Through Knowledge
There are approximately 46 different families of spiders and an estimated 1,460 species of spiders in Canada. The family of Araneidae, known as orb weavers, are the most common group of spiders to spin large webs around human structures. Thes large but shy and harmless spiders are often feared and misunderstood by people. But orb weaver spiders are actually fascinating and sometimes beautiful creatures that play an important role in the ecosystem. Here are some reasons why you don’t have to be scared of orb weaver spiders and why they are important:
They are not dangerous to humans. Orb weaver spiders are not venomous to humans and are not aggressive. They typically only bite if they feel threatened, and even then their bite is not harmful or even painful. In fact, orb weaver spiders are incredibly beneficial to humans as they help control the population of many pest insects, such as mosquitoes and flies.
They are can also act as pollinators. While most people think of bees and butterflies as pollinators, orb weaver spiders also play a role in pollination. Did you know that juvenile orb weaver diets have been shown to consist of as much as 25% pollen? The majority of species of orb weaver spiders spin webs that are sticky and act as traps for insects, including bees and butterflies. When these insects get caught in the web around flowering plants, they can will often transfer pollen from one plant to another.

Orb weaver spiders are masterful silk weavers. Orb weaver spiders are known for their intricate and beautiful webs. They have specialized glands in their large abdomens that produce different types of silk for different parts of their webs. For example, the radial threads of the web are made of a stronger silk to provide support, while the spiral threads are made of a stickier silk to catch prey. One of our primary methods for controlling orb weavers is to remove their webs, often called dewebbing. Typically, when webs are removed from the areas you don’t want spiders they will relocate to a better location and resume the important work of controlling pests for us! We can also encourage relocation by doing things to decrease the amount of food (insects) available to them in the areas we want them to leave. A well educated pest control professional can assist you in either of these two methods in addition to other helpful control techniques.
Spiders are also important prey for other animals. Birds, lizards, and even other spiders feed on orb weaver spiders. Without orb weaver spiders, these animals lose an important part of their normal food source.
Overall, orb weaver spiders are fascinating creatures that play an important role in the ecosystem. While some people may be afraid of them, it’s important to understand that they are not dangerous to humans and are actually helpful to you in many ways. By learning more about these spiders and appreciating their role in the ecosystem, we can better understand and appreciate the world around us.

Orb weaver spiders are known for their intricate and beautiful webs, but they also have a rather gross habit when it comes to their feeding. These spiders will often wrap their prey in silk and suck out the liquefied insides, leaving behind an empty exoskeleton that looks like a discarded shell.
But that’s not all – orb weaver spiders are also known for their rather unappetizing mating habits. The male spider will often approach the female while waving his legs and producing vibrations that mimic the movements of prey caught in her web. If the female is receptive, the male will then climb onto her back and insert one of his pedipalps (which are modified appendages) into her genital opening to fertilize her eggs.
While orb weaver spiders may be fascinating creatures to observe, their feeding and mating habits may be too gross for some. It’s always best to observe them from a safe distance and avoid any interactions with them to prevent getting tangled up in their webs.
Colorful and Entertaining

Peacock spiders are a captivating group of arachnids known for their vibrant colors and extraordinary courtship rituals. These tiny spiders, native to Australia, perform intricate and amusing dance routines to attract a mate, making them a delight to observe. In this section, we will explore the fascinating world of peacock spider dance moves and the role these elaborate displays play in their mating process.
The male peacock spider is a true showman, employing a variety of dance moves to catch the attention of a female. These moves include leg-waving, body-shaking, and even vibrating their colorful, fan-like abdomens. The goal is to captivate the female with a visually stunning and rhythmically synchronized performance. Each species of peacock spider has its own unique dance style, making these courtship displays even more fascinating to observe.
Interestingly, these elaborate performances serve a crucial purpose in the peacock spider’s reproductive process. Female peacock spiders are known to be highly selective when choosing a mate, so the males must put on a spectacular show to prove their worth. A successful dance routine demonstrates the male’s strength, agility, and overall genetic fitness, increasing his chances of being chosen by the female for mating.
Peacock spiders’ courtship dances are a captivating and humorous example of the diverse behaviours exhibited by animals in the natural world. By understanding and appreciating these remarkable displays, we can gain a deeper insight into the complex and interconnected lives of the creatures with whom we share our planet.
Aerial Adventurers

Many species of spiders exhibit a peculiar and fascinating behavior known as “ballooning,” in which they release strands of silk to catch the wind and effectively “fly” through the air. This surprising method of dispersal allows spiders to travel vast distances and find new habitats, showcasing their adaptability and resourcefulness. In this section, we will delve into the world of spider ballooning and explore the mechanics and purpose behind this amusing airborne behavior.
To engage in ballooning, a spider will climb to a high point, such as the tip of a plant or a fence, and raise its abdomen into the air. The spider then releases strands of silk, which catch the wind and create a sort of parachute. As the wind carries the silk threads away, the spider is lifted off the ground and can travel significant distances before landing in a new location.
Ballooning serves a crucial purpose in the life cycle of spiders. It allows young spiders, or spiderlings, to disperse from their birthplace and find new habitats in which to establish their own territories. This behaviour helps to prevent overcrowding and competition for resources within a single area, ensuring the survival and continued success of spider populations.
This amusing and fascinating method of transportation highlights the incredible adaptability and resourcefulness of spiders. Their ability to “fly” through the air using their silk demonstrates their remarkable engineering skills and provides a unique insight into the diverse range of behaviours exhibited by animals in the natural world.
In conclusion, spider ballooning is a captivating and humorous example of the incredible feats that animals are capable of achieving. By understanding and appreciating these extraordinary behaviours, we can gain a greater appreciation for the intricacies of the natural world and the diverse abilities of its inhabitants. This knowledge not only brings us closer to the creatures we share our planet with but also reminds us of the wonder and beauty that exists within the world of spiders.
